Nice shot... Ted, did you use flash on this one guy, or process the image later to darken and redden the surrounding group?

Good question.

I was shooting flash in this situation, then noticed that a continuous light (probably from one of the many video cameras there) was hitting him but no one else. So I changed my exposure to ISO 400, f/1.7 at 1/30th of a second and lowered the power on my flash. That way, the slightly bluish light from the camcorder light made him jump out from the darker, more orangish crowd. The pop from my flash made sure he was nice and sharp, though, and again hit him more than the crowd behind. (Since the flash was used below full power, I'd expect it had a duration shorter than 1/1000th. On the original full-size image, the eyes are nice and sharp.) Not much done in postprocessing, though I probably gave a little boost to the midtones and lights, but nothing extreme.
